Transition from collisionless to collisional MRI

چکیده
Recent calculations by Quataert et al. (2002) found that the growth rates of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in a collisionless plasma can differ significantly from those calculated using MHD. This can be important in hot accretion flows around compact objects. In this paper we study the transition from the collisionless kinetic regime to the collisional MHD regime, mapping out the dependence of the MRI growth rate on collisionality. A kinetic closure scheme for a magnetized plasma is used that includes the effect of collisions via a BGK operator. The transition to MHD occurs as the mean free path becomes short compared to the parallel wavelength 2π/k‖. In the weak magnetic field regime where the Alfvén and MRI frequencies ω are small compared to the sound wave frequency k‖c0, the dynamics are still effectively collisionless even if ω ≪ ν, so long as the collision frequency ν ≪ k‖c0; for an accretion flow this requires ν < ∼ Ω √ β. The low collisionality regime not only modifies the MRI growth rate, but also introduces collisionless Landau or Barnes damping of long wavelength modes, which may be important for the nonlinear saturation of the MRI.

Anisotropy-driven transition from collisionless to collisional regime in the dipolar modes of a trapped gaseous mixture
We evaluate the dipolar oscillations of a harmonically trapped fermion gas containing thermal bosonic impurities as a function of the anisotropy of the trap, from the numerical solution of the Vlasov-Landau equations for the one-body phase-space distribution functions. Starting from a situation in which the two components of the gaseous mixture perform almost independent oscillations inside a s...
متن کاملComparison of secondary islands in collisional reconnection to Hall reconnection.
Large-scale resistive Hall-magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the transition from Sweet-Parker (collisional) to Hall (collisionless) magnetic reconnection are presented; the first to separate secondary islands from collisionless effects. Three main results are described. There exists a regime with secondary islands but without collisionless effects, and the reconnection rate is faster than Swee...
متن کاملElectrostatic drift modes in a closed field line configuration
The stability of electrostatic drift waves in a closed field line configuration in collisionality regimes ranging from collisional to collisionless is compared. The maximum sustainable pressure gradient is found to be dependent on the ratio of the temperature and density gradients (h[d ln T/d ln n). The eigenmodes are seen to be flute-like. The stability boundary was found to be similar when bo...
متن کاملGas-Kinetic Schemes for the Compressible Euler Equations I: Positivity-Preserving Analysis
Numerical schemes based on the collisional BGK model have been developed in recent years. In this paper, we investigate the rst-order BGK schemes for the Euler equations. Particular attention is given to nd CFL-like conditions under which the schemes are positivity-preserving (i.e. density and internal energy remain nonnegative). The rst-order BGK schemes are linear combinations of collisionles...
